Psoriasis can affect you emotionally as well as physically but it can often be difficult to express exactly how it makes you feel with friends, family and even healthcare professionals.

In order to better understand the impact that psoriasis has on your everyday life, we were delighted to partner with the Mental Health Foundation on ‘See Psoriasis: Look Deeper’, an initiative which looks beyond the physical aspects of psoriasis and acknowledges the bigger life impact, including emotional wellbeing.

Dear Psoriasis... Postcard Initiative

We asked people to write a postcard their psoriasis, or draw a picture, to express their feelings about their condition. We were overwhelmed with the response. What we received were real works of art - letters and drawings that were so moving in their openness and honesty. Some were difficult to read, some were laugh-out-loud in their frankness, but all were true and very real representations of what living with psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis is really like.

What they all showed was what everyone who has psoriasis already knows; that it is much, much more than just a mildly irritating rash or 'skin thing'. Psoriasis is a multi-faceted condition that can affect people in many ways. There are physical symptoms - flaking, itching, redness, discomfort, even pain - but there are also impacts on mental wellbeing and quality of life, as well as social lives, careers and relationships.

Below are just some of the entries we received (click each postcard to view larger), but all were read, valued, and contributed to the content of the See Psoriasis: Look Deeper report and event. We extend our unreserved thanks to everybody who sent something in - we couldn't have done it without you!

If you are, or if you know, someone living with psoriasis, please do visit the sections on psoriasis and its treatments. If you want to talk to someone about your psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis, or have a specific question to ask, please get in touch with us, or visit the forums.

'Psoriasis - The Skin I'm In' Film Launched

Born out of collaboration between Dr Sandy McBride, Consultant Dermatologist, and storyteller Sarah Sutcliffe, ‘Psoriasis – The Skin I’m In’ is an original film made in association with the See Psoriasis: Look Deeper campaign which looks at the wider life impact of psoriasis, including emotional well-being and mental health.

The script, live storytelling piece and ultimately the film, were developed from over 20 hours of interviews with people living with psoriasis. The film is based on these true experiences of men and women living with psoriasis who have told their own stories.  Each narrative is told from the point of view of a person with psoriasis as they explain the ways the condition has affected them.

The film gives a meaningful insight into what it is like to live with psoriasis, which is enlightening for those unfamiliar with it and refreshing for those who are - articulating emotions and frustrations that people with psoriasis experience everyday but which are rarely depicted on film or discussed.

We hope this project will enable people with psoriasis to feel less alone, encourage them to seek effective treatment and trigger friends and family to support their loved ones in seeking help. Medical professionals will be enlightened about their patients’ lives and moved to provide the treatment and support that they need.
